Building on its success, Reconciliation Through Art returns bigger and better to Almonte September 27 and October 2-4. Commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it offers more opportunities than ever to discover and celebrate the art, music, food, culture and history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Conveniently scheduled this year as weekend events, the added and back-by-demand programs will inspire and connect all ages.
The excitement starts Sunday, September 27 before the main program with a lesson in traditional Métis dances with Riley McKenzie from the acclaimed Métis dance troupe Prairie Fire. Then the following weekend kicks off with a Traditional Métis Kitchen Party on Friday—a dinner and dance you won’t forget! Savour a feast of boulette y bang, and witness the amazing Edmonton Traditional Métis Dancers. Then move to the foot-stomping tunes of Juno-nominated Amanda Rheaume, like “Come on Down to Flossie’s,” with the old-time fiddling of Jason Lepine & Lionel Desjarlais. Enjoy the scrumptious Bear Paws from the Frybread Queen. Revel the night away!
On Saturday enjoy the diverse showcase and sale of Indigenous art with over two dozen artists. Learn and create Indigenous beadwork and make your own porcupine quill earrings, with the guidance of Métis Knowledge Keeper Patsea Griffin.
Sunday begins with a morning Water Walk, then explores Indigenous narratives and culture at special presentations and storytelling. Experience traditional drumming and jingle dancing, journey through the history of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn and the Métis, learn from Residential School and 60s Scoop survivors, and more. Concluding the day is a special screening at 3 pm of The Apology with acclaimed Métis filmmaker, Matt LeMay, whose crew had exclusive access to the historic delegation to Pope Francis.
With its dedicated volunteers and the continuing leadership of The Honourable Tony Belcourt, O.C., trailblazing Métis Elder and founding president of the Métis Council of Ontario, Reconciliation Through Art brings together standout artists, performers and educators for a memorable experience.
