Smiths Falls committee of the whole has recommended appointing four community members to help guide planning for a proposed regional sport and recreation facility.
The committee endorsed the appointments of Meghan McArthur, Mark Brus, Joan Culliton and Jonathan Botham to the Regional Recreation Facility Steering Committee. One community representative position will remain vacant while staff continue recruitment.
Director of Community Services Stephanie Clark said the town received seven applications for the five available community representative positions. Applications were evaluated based on criteria set out in the committee’s terms of reference, including community involvement, interest in recreation and community development, and the ability to contribute to the committee’s advisory role.
The steering committee will also include representatives appointed by participating municipalities. Those appointments include Deputy Mayor Ann Parry, with Coun. Marg Drum as alternate, from Merrickville-Wolford; Reeve Steve Fournier, with John Madison as alternate, from Drummond/North Elmsley; Coun. Rob Smith from Elizabethtown-Kitley; and Reeve Karen Jennings, with Dep. Reeve Jeffrey Carroll as alternate, from Montague Township. Rideau Lakes Township has chosen to defer appointing a representative until after the municipal election.
The steering committee was established to provide strategic advice and recommendations throughout the planning and development of a potential regional recreation facility. It includes representatives from participating municipalities, Smiths Falls council and the community.
Clark told committee that participating municipal partners have identified elected representatives for the committee, with the exception of Rideau Lakes Township, which has chosen to defer participation until after the municipal election.
The inaugural meeting of the steering committee is expected to take place in August, with appointment letters to be issued following council approval.
