Canadian Environment Week ran from May 31 to June 6, and seniors held climate-related events across Canada.
On World Environment Day, June 5, people gathered in Perth to discuss climate change. Organizers said the events were intended to encourage governments and media organizations to give greater attention to climate issues.
Seniors want a livable future for their children and grandchildren. According to Doug Norman, co-chair of Seniors for Climate Perth, “We’re in the race of our lives. We need to act now, because later is too late. We need to have conversations about climate change, and encourage faster and deeper action on climate by all levels of government.”
Anita Payne, co-chair, agreed. “We must phase out the burning of fossil fuels, and speed up the transition to renewable power and clean energy. We need climate action that is broad-based and preserves a livable future for our children and our grandchildren.”
Seniors for Climate is a coalition of Canadian climate groups mobilizing to bring attention to what it describes as a worsening climate emergency.
