UPDATE (April 8, 2026): Smiths Falls Police say four youths, all students at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI), were taken into custody following Tuesday’s incident. Police say a pellet gun resembling a Glock-style handgun and a .22-calibre replica handgun were seized.
The school remained in lockdown for more than an hour while officers conducted room-to-room checks and searched some lockers. The lockdown was lifted at about 12:30 p.m. A hold and secure at Chimo Elementary School was lifted earlier, just before noon.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
SFDCI lockdown lifted after search completed
SMITHS FALLS — A lockdown at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) has been lifted after police responded to a report of a gun being shown inside the school.
According to the Smiths Falls Police Service, officers were called to the high school following the report today, Tuesday, April 7. Two replica handguns were seized and a youth was taken into custody.
In a message to families, the Upper Canada District School Board said the school was placed in lockdown due to a “potential threat,” with police on site actively investigating. During the lockdown, interior doors were secured and students and staff remained in classrooms. Families were asked not to attend the school, and students were not permitted to leave.
Police said all students were safe and secure.
As a precaution, Chimo Elementary School was also placed in lockdown. That lockdown has since been lifted.
Police conducted a thorough search of the school to ensure the safety of students and staff. The investigation is ongoing.
