Smiths Falls Bears follow with victory over Rockland, hold Robinson Division lead
SMITHS FALLS — The Bears didn’t send roses Friday night — instead, they ripped into the Carleton Place Canadians for an 8–2 win.
It was not a great night to be a Canadians fan. Smiths Falls seized the early initiative and pummelled Carleton Place, outshooting them 39–21. Carter Beauchesne gave the Bears a head start with the opening goal at 8:07, then added his second at 14:25 of the first period. Blake Sheridan followed with what would stand as the game-winning goal at 15:56.
The second period looked much the same. Dean Carvalho buried his chance at 3:39, and Davis Hails added another at 11:49.
Early in the third, Marc-Antoine Riopel scored at the 2:00 mark. The Canadians finally found their way onto the scoreboard with a goal by Jaxon McVie-Stevenson at 3:26, followed by another at 4:07 from Nathan Landriault. But the Bears were not finished. Jacob Smith struck at 8:16, and Gus Rabe closed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 10:36.
Carvalho was named first star, Smith earned second star honours, and McVie-Stevenson picked up third star for Carleton Place.
The following night, the Bears managed the seemingly impossible — defeating the Rockland Nationals on their home ice in a 4–3 victory.
After a scoreless first period, Caeden Heins and Carter Beauchesne scored in the second. Kade Hockenhull added another in the third, and Jackson Heron secured the win for Smiths Falls.
With 61 points, the Bears now sit in first place in the Robinson Division and second overall in the league standings.
In additional good news, the Canadian Junior Hockey League recently ranked Smiths Falls Bears 14th in the nation in its Feb. 9 Top 20 rankings.
