Smiths Falls Bears roll to 6–2 and 3–1 wins, secure playoff spot and top their division
SMITHS FALLS — The Smiths Falls Bears faced off against the Pembroke Lumber Kings over the weekend for a two-game series.
Friday night’s game at the Den was clearly dominated by the Bears from the start. Andrea Blais, assisted by Luka Benoit and Nicholas Larkin, opened the scoring in the second half of the first period at 12:49. A power-play opportunity then allowed Carter Beauchesne to extend the lead to 2–0 at 15:58, with assists from Benoit and Jackson Heron.
Pembroke got on the board early in the second period with a goal from Maxim Delage, but the Bears weren’t done. Jackson Heron used another power play to score the eventual game-winning goal at 7:38, set up by Beauchesne and Tyson Parker. Peyton Veltkamp added an insurance goal at 14:32, assisted by Gus Rabe and Caeden Heins. A lapse in focus late in the period allowed Pembroke to score a short-handed goal at 19:51, again by Delage.
The third period saw the Bears seal the win with two more goals. Kade Hockenhull, assisted by Blais and Larkin, scored at 7:10, and Gus Rabe finished off the half-dozen on the scoreboard at 17:20, with helpers from Heins and D.J. Ott.
Smiths Falls took a well-earned 6–2 victory, outshooting Pembroke 60–22. First star honours went to Jackson Heron, second star to Jack Ferguson (PLK), and third star to Gus Rabe.
Sunday’s rematch in Pembroke saw both teams score in the first period — Braden Childerhose for the Bears and Simon Kobylecki for the Lumber Kings. In the second, Carter Beauchesne and Peyton Veltkamp added goals for Smiths Falls. The third period remained scoreless, and the Bears secured a 3–1 win while outshooting Pembroke 50–24.
With 68 points, the Bears now lead their division, sit second overall in the league, and have officially secured a spot in the playoffs.
