Smiths Falls Bears defeat Ottawa 4-3 to advance to championship series
SMITHS FALLS — The Smiths Falls Bears have advanced to the Bogart Cup final.
Friday night’s game was a marathon, stretching into double overtime before the Bears secured a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Junior Senators.
Ottawa opened the scoring early, with Josh Lachapelle finding the net at 4:45 of the first period. Smiths Falls responded with a goal by Dean Carvallo at 13:40 to even the score.
Peyton Veltkamp gave the Bears the lead at 18:29 of the second period, but Ottawa answered quickly, with Henry Brady tying the game at 19:08.
David Deschatelets put the Senators ahead at 7:18 of the third period.
Smiths Falls continued to press and found the equalizer late in the period, as Luka Benoit scored at 17:12 to send the game to overtime.
The first overtime period solved nothing, forcing a second extra frame.
Luka Benoit scored the game-winner at 18:28 of double overtime to lift the Bears to victory and secure their place in the final.
Benoit was named first star, Tyson Parker earned second star honours, and Lachapelle received third star for Ottawa.
The Bears will face the Rockland Nationals in the Bogart Cup final.
