Smiths Falls Bears follow up with Sunday win over the Hawkesbury Hawks
SMITHS FALLS — What a wild game — like taking a shot of hot chili sauce straight from the bottle.
Friday night’s Bears game against the Cornwall Colts started out rather innocently, if not somewhat unlucky for Smiths Falls. The Colts galloped to an early lead with a goal by Derek Rhodes at 4:22, then extended their advantage with a power-play goal by Lyndom Lamb at 6:12.
Tyson Parker finally broke the spell for the Smiths Falls Bears with a power-play goal at the 14:23 mark, slowly setting the Smiths Falls steamroller in motion — one that would go on to dominate the second period.
Just 1:55 into the middle frame, Gus Rabe scored the Bears’ next goal. Alex Fortier followed at 7:41 to put Smiths Falls into the lead. Cornwall responded by switching goaltenders, pulling Gabriel Poitras in favour of Colton Rheaume.
The change did little to slow the Bears. At 9:37, Luka Benoit sent the puck into the Colts’ net. Just seconds later, Dean Carvallo added a power-play goal at 9:48. Carter Beauchesne showed a lucky hand with yet another man-advantage marker at 18:51, and D.J. Ott followed at 19:38 with — you may have guessed it — another power-play goal.
Tensions boiled over early in the third period when a major fight broke out, highlighted by a rare goalie fight right at centre ice. With Rheaume and Bears netminder Ruddy ejected, goaltending duties fell to Poitras and Heideman for the remainder of the game.
Cornwall found its way back with a power-play goal by Colby Lauzon at 5:27, then added another from Brandon Rockwell shortly after. The final word, however, belonged to the Bears. Parker scored his second of the night at 17:55, sealing an 8–4 Smiths Falls victory.
Smiths Falls heavily outshot Cornwall 51–24.
Unsurprisingly, Parker earned first-star honours, Caeden Heins was named second star, and Rockwell picked up third star for Cornwall.
The Bears added another win the following day, posting a 3–1 decision over the Hawkesbury Hawks. Jackson Heron, Caeden Heins and Marc-Antoine Riopel provided the scoring.
Smiths Falls remains in second place in the Robinson Division, slowly closing the gap on Kemptville with 59 points. Overall, the Bears have moved into third place league-wide, tied with Ottawa but holding three games in hand. League-leading Rockland remains out of reach for now with 80 points.
