Smiths Falls council discussed major infrastructure funding opportunities, veterans recognition, heritage preservation and community initiatives during its June 15 meeting.
Funding applications target major projects
Council directed staff to apply for provincial housing-enabling infrastructure funding for two major projects: the proposed regional recreation facility and upgrades to the town’s wastewater solids-handling system.
To strengthen the applications, council supported offering a 100 per cent reduction in residential development charges for three years if funding is approved, along with a municipal contribution of up to 20 per cent of project costs.
As part of the wastewater project, council endorsed anaerobic digestion with cake haulage as the preferred long-term solids-handling option. The project is estimated at approximately $31 million.
Indigenous Peoples Day celebration planned
Mayor Shawn Pankow proclaimed June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day in Smiths Falls and announced plans for an evening gathering beginning at the new bridge.
The event is expected to include a barbecue, smudging ceremony, a visit to the healing circle and a bridge-lighting ceremony following sunset.
Veterans Way proposal receives support
Council expressed support for a request from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 to rename the eastern portion of Confederation Drive as Veterans Way.
Councillors noted the roadway serves primarily as access to the Rideau Canal lock station and the new pedestrian bridge and is located adjacent to the community’s war memorial.
Historic home receives heritage approval
Council approved a heritage alteration permit for the Abel Russell Ward House at 57 Chambers St. to allow replacement of deteriorated railings and spindles.
Council noted the home is approaching its 200th anniversary and praised the owner’s efforts to preserve one of Smiths Falls’ oldest buildings.
Volunteer Lanark initiative launched
Coun. Jennifer Miller reported she has joined a countywide working group exploring the creation of Volunteer Lanark, an organization aimed at supporting volunteer recruitment and retention across the region.
She said the initiative is being developed in response to declining volunteerism affecting community organizations across Lanark County.
