Smiths Falls council dealt with a wide range of business during its regular meeting July 27, receiving updates on the town’s financial position and Community Safety and Well-being Plan while also approving a climate action strategy, extending support for transitional housing, updating procurement policies and reviewing the municipality’s latest budget outlook.
Climate Action Plan adopted
Council approved the Town of Smiths Falls Climate Action Plan, establishing a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and strengthen the community’s resilience to climate change. The plan outlines both municipal and community actions that will guide future decision-making and position the town for funding opportunities tied to climate initiatives.
June budget shows finances tracking as expected
Council received its June budget monitor, providing a mid-year snapshot of municipal finances. Staff reported the town remains generally on track with its 2026 operating budget while continuing to monitor revenues, expenditures and capital spending throughout the remainder of the year.
Procurement policy updated to support Buy Ontario
Council approved amendments to its procurement policy to incorporate Buy Ontario provisions, aligning the municipality’s purchasing practices with provincial requirements. The changes are intended to strengthen support for Ontario suppliers while maintaining competitive procurement practices.
Carebridge agreement extended
Council approved an extension of its memorandum of understanding with Carebridge Community Support for the use of 30 Robinson Ave., allowing the organization to continue delivering transitional housing and related support services from the property. The extension ensures continuity while longer-term plans continue to be explored.
Encroachment application approved
Council approved an encroachment agreement for 12 Maple Ave., allowing a property owner to proceed with improvements that extend into municipal property, subject to the town’s standard conditions and legal agreement.
