The Town of Smiths Falls is reporting a diesel fuel spill that took place at the basin at Victoria Park on the evening of May 6, 2021.

Upon learning of the presence of diesel fuel in the water at Victoria Park, the Town of Smiths Falls took the following actions:

  • The Smiths Falls’ Fire Department responded and coordinated the placement of absorbent material in the water to contain the spill.
  • The spill was reported to the spills action centre and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks, as well as Le Boat.

The Smiths Falls’ Fire Department was able to contain the spill and clean up crews are currently on scene.

The Town would like to stress that at no time was there any threat to the municipal water system in Smiths Falls. It is estimated that the clean up crew will have the area cleaned up from the spill by the end of day today.

It is important to note that there is a strong smell of diesel fuel in the area and residents are requested to avoid the area to allow crews to complete the full clean up.
