Smiths Falls police have identified the man whose body was found in the Rideau Canal earlier this week as a 96-year-old town resident.
Emergency crews responded shortly after receiving a 9-1-1 call on July 7 from a boater who reported finding a body in the water near the shoreline off Queen Street.
Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service, Lanark County Paramedic Service and Smiths Falls Fire Service attended the scene, where the individual was pronounced dead.
Police have identified the deceased as John Everett, 96, of Smiths Falls.
A post-mortem examination conducted by the Office of the Chief Coroner determined Everett died of a heart attack and that his death was due to natural causes.
The Smiths Falls Police Service extended its condolences to Everett’s family and friends.
