Smiths Falls Police arrest 3 in theft case, lay charges in fraud and IPV investigations

Smiths Falls Police arrest three in theft and fraud investigation

The Smiths Falls Police Service began an investigation April 3, 2026, after a wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle entered overnight. The victim later discovered unauthorized transactions on their bank account.

Through surveillance footage, police identified three suspects.

On April 4, 2026, officers on proactive patrol arrested one suspect without incident.

Harry Richert, 54, of Smiths Falls, is charged with theft, possession of property obtained by crime and use of a credit card. He was released from custody with conditions and a future court date.

On April 23, 2026, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Unit, police arrested two additional suspects in connection with the investigation.

Jordan Wilkinson, 37, and Tyler Pretty, 38, both of Smiths Falls, are each charged with theft, possession of property obtained by crime and use of a credit card. Pretty is also charged with failing to comply with a probation order.

Both were held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Charge laid in shoplifting investigation

Police received a report April 13, 2026, of a theft at a business.

Officers responded and, with the help of surveillance footage, identified and arrested a suspect nearby without incident.

Melissa Powers, 39, of Smiths Falls, is charged with theft under $5,000. She was released with conditions and a future court date.

IPV breach results in arrest

Police launched an investigation April 15, 2026, after receiving information that court-ordered conditions may have been breached in a case involving intimate partner violence.

The suspect later surrendered to police without incident.

A 49-year-old man from Smiths Falls is charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Arrest made in fraud investigation

On April 21, 2026, police received information about an attempted fraud involving the municipality’s insurance provider.

A suspect was identified and later surrendered without incident.

Brian Stinson, 38, of Perth, is charged with making a false statement in writing. He was released from custody with conditions and a future court date.

Charge laid in shoplifting incident

Police responded April 22, 2026, after loss prevention staff at a business detained a suspect for shoplifting.

Ryan Warren, 32, of Ottawa, is charged with theft under $5,000. He was released from custody with a future court date.

Wanted person arrested

On April 22, 2026, Smiths Falls police, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police Frontenac County detachment, arrested a person wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Kevin Heim, 34, of Inverary, was wanted for failing to attend court in March 2025 on charges of possession of property obtained by crime. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Downtown patrol results in arrest related to IPV investigation

On April 22, 2026, an officer on proactive patrol in the downtown core observed a wanted suspect, who was arrested without incident.

The suspect was wanted in connection with an intimate partner violence investigation that began April 20, 2026.

A 50-year-old Smiths Falls resident is charged with assault, forcible confinement, two counts of failing to comply with a release order and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
