Committee will help guide the proposed $49-million Smiths Falls recreation facility project
SMITHS FALLS — Council has moved ahead with forming a steering committee to guide development of a proposed regional recreation facility, appointing three members and an alternate during discussion at the committee of the whole meeting on March 23.
Director of Community Services Stephanie Clark returned to council seeking participation, noting that Mayor Shawn Pankow and Coun. Jay Brennan had already indicated interest in serving on the committee.
Clark told council the committee will operate in an advisory role, with scheduling still to be determined based on member availability.
“The intention is not to be a meeting-heavy committee,” Clark said.
She also acknowledged the timing of the project as the municipality heads toward an election year, noting the work will span multiple terms of council.
“We believe that the time is of the essence in getting started,” Clark said.
Coun. Dawn Quinn volunteered to join the committee, filling the third council seat. Coun. Peter McKenna volunteered as the alternate.
The Town of Smiths Falls is leading the project, which is being developed as a $49-million regional sports and recreation facility with participation from partner municipalities and user groups.
