A portion of Confederation Drive is set to become Veterans Way following approval from Smiths Falls committee of the whole on Sept. 28.
Council supported a staff recommendation to rename the section of Confederation Drive on the east side of the new timber bridge in honour of local veterans.
The Royal Canadian Legion requested the change during a presentation to council on Oct. 6, 2025, asking that the section be renamed Veterans Way “in honour and support of our Smiths Falls veterans.”
Parks Canada’s Combined Locks Station is the only property with an address on the affected section of road. Parks Canada advised the town the address would change but otherwise had no comment on the proposal.
The town sought comments from municipal departments, outside agencies, the Municipal Heritage Committee and the public before bringing the recommendation forward.
The change will require a new street sign at an estimated cost of $100. Town promotional maps will be updated once existing stock is depleted.
Staff will now proceed with the required notice of final decision under the town’s street-naming bylaw which will come back to council for final approval.
