Stealing the Bloom Farm expects to welcome more than 7,000 visitors this season
What began as a small farming venture on a historic Westport-area property has grown into one of Leeds Grenville’s increasingly popular agritourism destinations.
According to Leeds Grenville Economic Development, Stealing the Bloom Farm Co., located on Sunnyside Road in Rideau Lakes Township, welcomed approximately 1,000 visitors during its first year of offering tours. That number grew to 4,500 visitors last year and is expected to exceed 7,000 this season.
Owned by Matthew Telfser and his wife, Heidi, the seven-acre farm offers guided tours, a mobile petting zoo, a seasonal farm stand and a range of agricultural services. The operation is also part of the 1000 Islands Rideau Canal Waterways Animal Adventures program, which promotes hands-on animal experiences throughout the region.
Telfser said introducing visitors to farming life has become an important part of the business.
“The tour here is only $10 per person, and the farm stand offers our pasture-raised beef, with honey, maple syrup and other items from area farmers,” he said.
Tours provide opportunities for visitors to interact with a variety of animals, including Highland cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits, ducks and turkeys, while learning about regenerative farming practices and the day-to-day realities of operating a small farm.
According to the farm’s website, the property uses no-till gardening methods and rotational grazing as part of its regenerative approach to agriculture. The farm also offers educational experiences focused on animal husbandry and sustainable land management.
One of Telfser’s goals is to operate the farm in a way that supports both environmental sustainability and financial viability.
“Everything sheep do helps support the farm,” Telfser said. “Their wool, manure, grazing habits, and breeding all contribute value.”
Leeds Grenville Economic Development noted that Stealing the Bloom Farm Co. has become a draw for visitors seeking authentic rural experiences, while also providing opportunities to learn more about food production and farming practices.
Future plans for the farm include infrastructure improvements aimed at supporting continued growth and enhancing operations.
Stealing the Bloom Farm Co. offers tours by appointment and operates a seasonal farm stand featuring products grown or raised on the property, along with goods sourced from other local producers. The farm is located at 28 Sunnyside Rd. near Westport.
