Capsized canoe leads to drowning on Upper Rideau Lake

WESTPORT — One person has died following the capsizing of a canoe on Upper Rideau Lake.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, shortly after 5:30 p.m., members of the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a marine distress call involving a capsized canoe.

Officers, along with Leeds and Grenville Paramedic Service and the Rideau Lakes Fire Department attended the scene. The individual was located and transported to hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as a 24-year-old male from Brampton. A postmortem examination will be conducted. The individual was not wearing a personal flotation device.
